21st NTD

Noma (water cancer) has been added as the 21st disease to the WHO's list of NTDs (English link).

Noma is a gangrenous inflammation that appears mainly in children's mouths, rapidly destroying the cheeks, jaws, lips, and nose, and can lead to death.

It is thought to be caused by infection with multiple bacteria, but the etiology is not yet fully understood. For more information on Norma, please refer to the WHO fact sheet or the website of a patient organization.
